Quicklime’s role in modern metallurgy

Firering Strategic Minerals plc

Quicklime is a basic but important material in metallurgy. It helps remove impurities, improve metal quality and keep production processes more efficient. It supports industries where consistency, cost control and reliable output matter.

Quicklime is made by heating limestone to produce calcium oxide. In metal production, it is mainly used as a flux. This means it helps unwanted materials separate from molten metal. Impurities such as silica, sulphur and phosphorus react with quicklime and move into the slag, which can then be removed. This is especially important in steelmaking. Quicklime helps producers control slag chemistry and reduce impurities in the final product. Cleaner steel can support better quality, fewer process issues and more reliable production.

Quicklime is also used in refining other metals, including copper, zinc and lead. In these processes, it can help neutralise acidic materials and support impurity separation. Its use across different metal markets gives it broader industrial relevance.

Another reason quicklime matters is furnace performance. Proper slag formation can help protect furnace linings and support smoother operations. In heavy industry, reducing disruption and protecting equipment are important because downtime can be costly.

Firering Strategic Minerals plc (LON:FRG) is an emerging quicklime producer and critical minerals explorer, with operations in Zambia and West Africa.
