Natural gas outlook strengthens as heat and LNG demand support the market

US natural gas is moving into a more constructive near-term setup as hot weather, firmer LNG feedgas demand and supportive storage dynamics improve the balance between supply and consumption.

Weather remains a central driver. Forecasts point to above-normal temperatures across key US regions through 21 August, supporting continued air-conditioning demand and higher gas use for power generation. That provides a clear source of near-term consumption at a time when the market is closely watching whether stronger demand can absorb production running close to record levels.

Flows to major US LNG export plants have edged higher in recent sessions, increasing the amount of gas being drawn from the domestic market. Although average August feedgas demand remains below July levels, partly because of reduced activity at facilities including Freeport LNG and Golden Pass, the recent improvement in flows points to a firmer demand backdrop.

Stronger LNG feedgas demand during a period of elevated summer cooling requirements can tighten the domestic balance more quickly, particularly if export facilities increase utilisation. Any further recovery in LNG flows would strengthen that effect and could reduce the amount of gas available for storage injections.

Production remains high, but the market is showing an ability to absorb significant supply. Lower 48 dry gas output averaged around 110.6 billion cubic feet per day in August, close to the record 110.7 billion cubic feet per day recorded in July. High production continues to limit the risk of an abrupt supply shortage, while stronger demand provides a clearer route towards a more balanced market.

Storage levels remain comfortable rather than restrictive. US energy companies added 33 billion cubic feet of natural gas to storage during the week ended 31 July, above expectations for a 31 billion cubic foot increase. The injection was also higher than the five-year average increase of 23 billion cubic feet and the 13 billion cubic foot addition recorded during the same week last year.

Total inventories reached 3.117 trillion cubic feet. Stocks were 0.4 per cent below year-earlier levels but remained 6.7 per cent above the five-year average. That surplus gives the market a healthy buffer while demand strengthens, reducing immediate supply risk and allowing attention to shift towards how quickly the excess can narrow as summer consumption and LNG exports increase.
