JPMorgan European Discovery Trust plc (LON:JEDT) has released its latest factsheet for April 2026.
Month in review as of 30/04/2026
- The Trust outperformed the benchmark over April.
- At the stock level, our overweight position in Nexans, a global leader in the cable industry, contributed to performance over the period following a strong start to 2026 as shown in the first-quarter earnings release and the announcement of an acquisition in the US low-voltage space that will be EPS accretive and complement Nexans’ low voltage footprint in Canada.
- An overweight position in BAWAG Group, a leading pan-European banking group with a strong presence in Austria and expanding into Ireland, also contributed to performance over the period. The company delivered robust financial results, maintaining solid profitability and operational efficiency. The announcement of its intention to acquire PTSB, Ireland’s third-largest bank, was a major positive catalyst, further enhancing its growth outlook.
- Our overweight position in Synsam, a leading Nordic optical retail chain, detracted from performance during the period. Shares weakened as the market grew concerned that a softer consumer sentiment, amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty, combined with ongoing store network expansion would pressure near-term earnings.
- Not holding a position in Soitec, a leader in the silicon-on-insulator wafers market, also detracted from performance over the period as the stock rallied alongside other players in the photonics ecosystem.
Looking ahead as of 30/04/2026
- Under a normalised environment, the outlook for corporate profits is healthy, and revisions are trending higher in most regions and industries. Solid economic growth—fuelled by fiscal and monetary stimulus, and, of course, the artificial intelligence (AI) investment boom—is supportive of earnings.
- Geopolitical escalation has begun to show up in activity data, with recent survey evidence pointing to weaker services momentum across major euro area economies as uncertainty rises.
- The economic outlook for the eurozone is characterised by cautious optimism. Activity in continental Europe is expected to rise, driven in part by the substantial fiscal stimulus announced by Germany in 2025.
- Policymakers are likely to remain willing to deploy targeted measures to cushion households and energy-intensive sectors when energy volatility spikes, which can help stabilise demand, but may complicate inflation dynamics.
