European shares rise as lower oil prices shift market focus

European stocks opened August higher as renewed US-Iran diplomacy pushed oil prices lower and reduced immediate concerns about inflation and interest rates.

The STOXX 50 rose 0.9%, while the broader STOXX Europe 600 gained 0.3%. Markets responded after US President Donald Trump said fresh talks with Iran would begin on Monday, easing concern over further disruption in energy markets.

Lower oil prices quickly affected sector performance. Airlines led the gains because fuel is one of their largest operating costs. Lufthansa rose 3.8% and Ryanair gained 3.3%, reflecting expectations that cheaper energy could support margins if the decline in oil prices continues.

The move also helped reduce some pressure around the inflation outlook. Energy costs feed directly into transport, production and consumer prices, so a sustained fall in oil could reduce the risk of further monetary tightening. That would improve the financing environment for companies and support equity valuations, although the outcome remains dependent on progress in the diplomatic talks.

Several large European companies also moved higher. SAP gained 3.7%, while Airbus and Safran each rose 3.2%. Their advances added support to the main regional indices and showed that buying was not limited to travel companies.

Worldline was the strongest performer in the STOXX Europe 600, rising almost 7%. The payment services company extended the rally recorded in the previous session, attracting further attention after a period of sharp share price movements.
