JEDT investment trust reports August progress; European activity set to rise

JEDT

JPMorgan European Discovery Trust plc (LON:JEDT) has released its latest factsheet for August 2026

Month in review

As of 31/08/2026

  • The trust outperformed the benchmark over the month.
  • At the stock level, an overweight position in Reply, a leading IT consulting and systems integration firm, contributed to performance during the period. The stock outperformed due to accelerating organic growth, which came in ahead of expectations. The company also announced a bolt-on acquisition in the defence sector and continued share buy backs.
  • An overweight position in Sydbank, a Danish bank, contributed to performance during the period. The stock outperformed due to solid operational execution plus the integration of the recent acquisition running ahead of plan.
  • An overweight position in SPIE, a European multi-services company providing technical services across infrastructure and facilities, detracted from performance during the period. While operational momentum remains strong, the company suffered from rising political risks in France.
  • An underweight position in Thyssenkrupp, a diversified industrial conglomerate with steel, marine systems and materials services divisions, detracted from performance during the period. The stock outperformed due to management’s spin-off announcement and strong guidance, supported by favourable EU tariff dynamics.

Looking ahead

As of 31/08/2026

  • Under a normalised environment, the outlook for corporate profits is healthy, and revisions are trending higher in most regions and industries. Solid economic growth – fuelled by fiscal and monetary stimulus, and, of course, the artificial intelligence (AI) investment boom – is supportive of earnings.
  • The economic outlook for the eurozone is characterised by cautious optimism. Activity in continental Europe is expected to rise, driven in part by the substantial fiscal stimulus announced by Germany in 2025.
  • European equities look well positioned to provide a stable core for portfolios. Diversified global revenue streams and sector mixes, along with attractive total yields, are particularly valuable when geopolitical headlines are driving elevated volatility.
  • Uncertainty and volatility create opportunities for long-term investors to identify companies where share prices have detached from fundamentals, with patience being key as more entry points emerge.
