Ilika has launched ORKA, a new brand for its Goliath solid-state battery technology, targeting underwater applications including autonomous underwater vehicles.
The batteries are designed to operate at depths of up to 6,000 metres without the heavy pressure vessels traditionally required to protect underwater battery systems. Potential applications include seabed surveys and monitoring subsea cables and pipelines.
The launch adds another target market for Ilika’s Goliath platform, alongside defence and electric mobility. The company is also working with Brompton on the potential use of its solid-state batteries in folding electric bicycles, with on-bike trials targeted for 2027.
Ilika has reported improvements in its Goliath cell prototypes, including energy density, charging speed, cycle life and peak power. The results were independently tested as part of a government-supported development programme.
The company also has a separate commercial activity through its Stereax solid-state batteries for medical devices, manufactured under an existing licence.
Ilika is developing its battery technology through commercial partnerships, with the aim of expanding into specialist markets without establishing large-scale manufacturing operations itself. Future growth will depend on customer adoption and the progression of development programmes into commercial orders.
Ilika plc (LON:IKA) is a pioneer in solid state battery technology enabling solutions for applications in Industrial IoT, MedTech, Electric Vehicles and Consumer Electronics.
