Fundamental XR is demonstrating how virtual surgical simulation can be integrated directly into medical training, with its work alongside Orbis International showing how the technology is being used before trainees move into live procedures.
At Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana, first-year resident Dr Patrick Sapana-Kosa completed more than 80 MSICS procedures and over 25 hours of virtual simulation before operating on a patient. The purpose is straightforward: trainees can practise repeatedly, make mistakes and correct them before those mistakes carry real clinical consequences.
The programme is already being used at scale within the hospital. Thirteen first-year residents have completed more than 230 hours of simulation training this year. The training is not optional. Residents begin with virtual simulation, then progress to wet labs and finally to live cases. Embedding simulation into the curriculum increases its practical relevance and reduces the risk that the platform is treated as an occasional training tool.
Residents can learn basic surgical steps in simulation before entering wet labs, allowing faculty to spend less time teaching fundamentals and more time on advanced guidance. Fundamental XR says the approach has also reduced errors during wet-lab sessions, which can help limit waste of tissue and surgical supplies.
The same model is being used at the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology. Participants there have reported improvements in how they perform individual surgical steps after using the simulator.
Orbis now connects 22 partner institutions across Africa, Asia and South America through the programme. Hundreds of early-stage surgeons have used the technology and completed thousands of hours of virtual practice.
That reach gives Fundamental XR an opportunity to show that its platform can be deployed across different institutions rather than remaining tied to a single hospital or training environment. Broader use also gives the company more opportunities to demonstrate whether simulation can become a repeatable part of surgical education.
