European stocks rise as oil prices fall and banks gain ahead of earnings

Fidelity European Trust

European stocks rose on Monday as lower oil prices and gains in banking shares supported markets, while investors prepared for a new round of corporate earnings reports.

The pan-European STOXX 600 gained 0.56% to 635.09 points by 0843 GMT on 12 October 2026. Spain’s IBEX led regional markets, rising 1.1%, while the STOXX 600 banking index advanced 1.5%.

Oil prices fell amid hopes of increased Russian supplies following an announcement by US President Donald Trump that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure after a US-Russian diesel supply deal. Lower oil prices helped support sentiment towards European equities.

Investors are now turning their attention to third-quarter earnings to assess corporate performance amid geopolitical uncertainty and elevated borrowing costs.

David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation, highlighted semiconductor companies and other artificial intelligence beneficiaries as important influences on near-term market sentiment.

Luxury goods group LVMH was due to report results after European markets closed on Monday, while semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML and investment firm EQT were scheduled to release results later in the week. Their updates are expected to provide further insight into business conditions and demand across key sectors.

Eurozone government bond yields also eased, supporting demand for riskier assets. However, yields remained near multi-year highs, reflecting continuing concerns that interest rates could stay elevated for longer.

Markets were expecting the European Central Bank to hold interest rates at its October meeting, while pricing in the possibility of a quarter-point increase in December. Nevertheless, the region’s weak economic growth outlook could limit the scope for further monetary tightening.

Elsewhere, European automobile shares rose 0.8% following an agreement by China to reduce exports of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles to the European Union.

Fidelity European Trust PLC (LON:FEV) aims to be the cornerstone long-term investment of choice for those seeking European exposure across market cycles.
