Drax targets AI infrastructure as a new driver of northern industrial growth

The expansion of artificial intelligence will require far more than software. It will depend on data centres, reliable electricity, grid connections, digital infrastructure, suitable land and skilled workers. Drax believes this creates a clear opportunity for the UK’s northern industrial regions.

Areas such as the Humber, Teesside and Merseyside already have many of the assets needed to support large-scale AI infrastructure. These include established energy networks, industrial land, ports, engineering expertise and access to technical skills.

AI data centres require large and consistent supplies of electricity, making access to generation and grid capacity central to investment decisions. Regions with existing energy infrastructure may therefore be better placed to attract new projects than areas where power connections are constrained or expensive to develop.

Drax argues that this could support a broader industrial renewal across the north of England. Rather than relying only on traditional industries, these regions could use their existing infrastructure to compete for investment linked to AI, digital services and advanced technology.

The Humber is a strong example. It combines port access, industrial sites, energy infrastructure and a skilled workforce. These features could reduce development barriers and improve the speed at which new projects are delivered.

AI infrastructure is highly physical. Unlike many service-sector businesses, data centres cannot operate without significant power, land and connectivity. Their location is therefore shaped by infrastructure rather than proximity to London or other established financial centres.

That creates the potential for more investment to move towards regions with the right industrial base. It could also support new employment, supply-chain activity and demand for engineering, construction and energy services.

Drax’s position reflects a wider strategic point. The growth of AI could increase the value of energy assets and industrial locations that are capable of supporting large-scale, power-intensive development. Companies already operating in these areas may be well placed to benefit from rising demand for electricity and infrastructure.
