Device Authority targets secure digital infrastructure for smart ports

Tern plc

Device Authority has set out a blueprint for how ports can build more secure, scalable and sustainable digital infrastructure as the number of connected devices and systems increases.

The Smart, Green Port Blueprint focuses on a practical problem. Ports are adopting more sensors, connected equipment, IoT platforms, analytics, digital twins and artificial intelligence. But adding technology in isolation can create fragmented systems, duplicated infrastructure and greater security and compliance risk.

Device Authority’s proposed model is designed to address that problem by creating a common digital foundation.

The blueprint uses a layered architecture covering connected devices, shared infrastructure, IoT platforms, data management and applications. Security and compliance sit across the entire structure rather than being added separately. The aim is to make it easier for port operators to introduce new digital services without rebuilding their infrastructure for every project.

A standardised architecture can reduce integration complexity, improve visibility across connected assets and make it easier to control how devices and data are managed. It can also reduce reliance on individual suppliers. By separating the underlying infrastructure from the applications running on top of it, ports can retain more flexibility when adopting new technologies or replacing existing systems.

Smart-port projects can involve large numbers of devices, multiple suppliers and different operational systems. Without a common framework, complexity can increase quickly.

Device Authority’s blueprint instead treats security, governance and interoperability as core infrastructure requirements. The model starts with sensors and field equipment and moves through shared communications infrastructure and IoT services. Data can then be contextualised and made available to higher-level applications such as analytics, digital twins and AI.
