Battery energy storage systems are becoming a key part of electricity infrastructure as more renewable power is added to the grid. Their role is simple: store electricity when supply is high and release it when demand rises or generation falls.
That makes battery storage particularly relevant to power systems with a growing share of wind and solar generation. Renewable output can change quickly and does not always match demand. Battery storage helps manage that imbalance by moving electricity from one period to another.
For developers, however, the opportunity depends on more than installing batteries. Project value is shaped by access to the grid, planning progress, land availability, construction costs and the ability to operate the asset efficiently once it is live.
Grid connection is one of the most important factors. A battery project with a viable connection and a clear route through planning can be significantly better positioned than an earlier-stage project facing delays or additional network requirements.

The company expects most revenue from its battery storage projects to come from electricity trading. The model is based on charging batteries when electricity prices are lower and selling power back to the grid when prices are higher.
Ampeak Energy also expects revenue from the Capacity Market and Ancillary Services. This gives its projects more than one potential income stream and reduces dependence on a single part of the electricity market.
The company plans to use an experienced third party to optimise and trade its battery assets. That is important because the performance of a battery project depends not only on the physical asset but also on how effectively it is operated across changing market conditions.
