Understanding CSCS cards and construction qualifications

CSCS cards provide evidence of a construction worker’s qualifications and health and safety training. They are widely used across UK construction sites, where contractors often require workers to hold the appropriate card for their role.

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) covers different occupations and qualification levels, with each card type reflecting the holder’s skills, training or professional status.

The green Labourer card is intended for workers carrying out general labouring duties. The blue Skilled Worker card is for qualified tradespeople, while the gold card covers advanced craft workers and supervisors. The black card is for construction managers, and white cards are available for academically or professionally qualified individuals. Red cards cover certain trainees, apprentices and workers progressing towards the required qualifications.

The correct card depends on the individual’s job, qualifications and experience. Applicants must meet the requirements for their chosen card, which may include completing recognised training and passing the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

For those entering the construction industry, the green Labourer card is one possible starting point. Applicants generally need to complete the required health and safety qualification and pass the appropriate CITB test before applying.

Workers in skilled trades or supervisory positions may need additional vocational qualifications, such as an NVQ or SVQ, depending on the card they are applying for. Higher-level qualifications and professional memberships may also be relevant for certain professional roles.

Applications are made through the official CSCS process, with applicants required to provide evidence of their qualifications and test results. Card validity and renewal requirements depend on the card type.
