Thor Energy is building exposure to Australia’s emerging natural hydrogen sector as exploration activity increases around geological hydrogen deposits in South Australia. The company is among the early participants examining whether naturally occurring hydrogen can be identified and developed commercially.

Natural hydrogen is generated underground through geological processes rather than manufactured using electricity. This is significant because conventional green hydrogen depends on electrolysis, which requires substantial power input. A commercially viable natural hydrogen resource could offer a simpler production route if sufficient volumes can be identified, extracted and delivered economically.

South Australia is becoming a focal point for this work, with Thor Energy and Gold Hydrogen pursuing exploration opportunities in the state.

One area of interest is the possible connection between underground hydrogen and unusual surface features known as fairy circles. These areas of reduced vegetation may in some cases indicate gas movement from below the surface.

Australia’s geology may also support natural hydrogen generation through reactions involving iron-rich rocks and water. Magnetite-bearing formations can produce hydrogen under suitable temperature and pressure conditions, while faults may create pathways and environments where these reactions take place.
