Thor Energy is moving its HY-Range natural hydrogen project towards a more decisive stage as it prepares to use seismic data to define potential drilling targets.
The company has already reported natural hydrogen readings of up to 3%, giving it a basis to continue exploration. The next step is to determine whether those surface readings are linked to subsurface geological structures that could support a larger hydrogen system.
The work is expected to help Thor identify and prioritise structures for possible drilling, moving the project beyond surface indications and towards direct testing.
The investment case now depends increasingly on execution. Surface readings can support an exploration theory, but they do not confirm a commercial resource. Seismic results should provide a clearer view of the geology and help determine whether the company has sufficiently strong targets to justify drilling.
If suitable structures are identified, drilling would become the most important test of the HY-Range opportunity. A successful well could significantly strengthen the technical case for the project.
Exploration costs tend to rise as projects move from field sampling into seismic work and drilling. Having funding available gives Thor greater flexibility to progress the project without making each technical step dependent on immediate new financing.
This places HY-Range at a clear transition point. Thor has moved beyond the initial question of whether natural hydrogen can be detected at surface. The focus is now on whether the geology supports drillable targets and whether those targets can ultimately demonstrate a meaningful subsurface hydrogen system.
