Thor Energy is progressing its HY-Range natural hydrogen and helium project in South Australia, using geochemical surveys to refine exploration targets and assess the potential for commercially viable resources.
The project covers former Petroleum Exploration Licence PEL 120, acquired through Thor’s purchase of an 80.2% stake in Go Exploration in February 2025. The licence was subsequently converted to Regulated Substance Exploration Licence RSEL 802, granting rights to explore for hydrogen and helium.
Located near Gold Hydrogen’s Ramsay-1 and Ramsay-2 discoveries, HY-Range sits within a region attracting interest in naturally occurring hydrogen and helium.
A March 2025 assessment by RISC Advisory estimated prospective resources attributable to Thor of 842 billion cubic feet of hydrogen and 90 billion cubic feet of helium. These are unrisked estimates of undiscovered resources, not confirmed reserves, and further exploration is required to establish their scale and commercial potential.
Thor completed its first geochemical sampling phase in May 2025, recording natural hydrogen concentrations of up to 3,000 parts per million alongside helium anomalies. A second survey, completed in March 2026, expanded sampling coverage and aimed to improve data quality and refine priority exploration areas.
The results will help inform geological models and identify potential targets for future drilling. Establishing whether the surface indications correspond to recoverable accumulations will be a key step in assessing the project’s commercial prospects.
Thor is also pursuing natural hydrogen and helium opportunities elsewhere in South Australia, including exploration licence applications in the Otway Basin with joint venture partner H2EX.
The company’s projects remain at the exploration stage, with future progress dependent on further geological work, target definition and drilling. Confirmation of commercially viable resources would be required before development decisions could be made.
Thor Energy PLC (LON:THR) is a leading exploration company focused on natural hydrogen and helium, with a significant footprint in the highly prospective South Australian region.
