Law Debenture highlights governance support for local government pension schemes

LWDB

Law Debenture is highlighting its independent governance and oversight services for Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) funds as new regulatory requirements increase the focus on accountability, decision-making and investment pool oversight.

The company says 2026 is an implementation year for LGPS funds, with changes affecting governance, pooling, valuations, administration and employer risk. Its services are designed to help administering authorities assess their governance arrangements and prepare for the requirements.

Under the new framework, LGPS funds must appoint an independent person by 31 December 2026. Governance, training and conflicts of interest strategies are also required, alongside independent governance reviews on a three-year cycle.

Law Debenture can provide a named independent individual supported by its wider pensions team. The company says this approach gives funds access to collective expertise while reducing reliance on a single individual.

Its services include independent governance reviews, ongoing governance support, committee effectiveness assessments and assistance with training and conflicts of interest policies. Reviews can examine how decisions are prepared, challenged, documented and implemented, as well as oversight of advisers, administration and investment pooling arrangements.

Law Debenture also emphasises its independence from investment consultants, actuaries and administrators. It says this allows it to review governance and decision-making without assessing its own advice or services.

The company has more than 50 pensions and governance professionals supporting over 230 appointments, according to its published information. Its experience includes large defined benefit schemes and oversight of pooled investment management models.

Law Debenture Corporation plc (LON:LWDB) provides a wider range of services including corporate and pension trusts, process agent services, treasury management, corporate services including for special purpose vehicles, structured finance administration and whistleblowing services.
