Ilika targets earlier commercialisation opportunities for Goliath solid-state batteries

Ilika Plc

Ilika is broadening the route to market for its Goliath solid-state batteries, targeting defence and consumer applications alongside electric vehicles as it works towards commercialisation.

The UK-based battery developer is focusing on applications where safety, reduced weight and performance could support earlier commercial opportunities while its larger-format battery technology continues to develop.

Goliath is Ilika’s large-format solid-state battery platform, designed primarily for electric vehicles and consumer appliances, with potential applications in defence. The company is pursuing an asset-light business model, aiming to license its intellectual property to manufacturing partners while using pilot production facilities to demonstrate its technology and support customer evaluation.

Ilika has developed 10Ah Goliath prototypes and delivered samples to customers for assessment. Feedback from a UK defence agency on safety testing under battlefield conditions has supported further engagement with companies developing power solutions for European defence forces.

The defence market offers a potential route to commercialisation where battery safety and weight are key considerations. These attributes could be relevant to portable power systems and other equipment used in demanding environments, although commercial adoption will depend on further validation and customer agreements.

Ilika is also working with Brompton Bicycle on a joint development programme to integrate its 10Ah Goliath prototypes into battery packs for future folding e-bikes. The collaboration provides another opportunity to evaluate the technology in a market where battery size, weight and safe use are important factors.

The company’s automotive programme remains a longer-term opportunity. Changes in electric vehicle manufacturers’ strategies have made the timing of adoption less predictable, prompting Ilika to explore markets where customer evaluation and commercialisation may progress sooner.

Its automated pilot production line, commissioned in October 2025, has the capacity to produce up to 1.5MWh of batteries annually, supporting internal validation and customer testing. Ilika is also working towards further prototype development with the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre and industry partners.

Ilika plc (LON:IKA) is a pioneer in solid state battery technology enabling solutions for applications in Industrial IoT, MedTech, Electric Vehicles and Consumer Electronics.
