Genflow Biosciences is developing gene-based treatments aimed at diseases linked to ageing. Its research centres on SIRT6, a gene associated with DNA repair, metabolism, inflammation and healthy ageing.
The company’s technology uses a naturally occurring variant of SIRT6 found in some people who live beyond 100 years. Genflow is seeking to deliver this centenarian-associated variant into cells to support biological functions that can decline with age.
Its pipeline applies the same core SIRT6 technology across human medicine, veterinary treatment and skin-related applications. The strategy reduces dependence on a single programme while allowing Genflow to test its scientific approach through different delivery systems.
Genflow’s main human candidate is GF-1002. The treatment uses messenger RNA carried in lipid nanoparticles to produce the centenarian SIRT6 variant inside the body.
The delivery system is designed to avoid permanent changes to a patient’s DNA. It does not integrate into the genome and does not replicate itself. The company also states that the treatment does not transfer bacterial genetic material.
Temporary gene expression may reduce some of the risks linked to permanent genetic modification. However, GF-1002 remains at the preclinical stage and must complete further laboratory, regulatory and clinical development before its safety or effectiveness can be established.
Genflow is also developing GF-1004 for veterinary use. This programme delivers the SIRT6 variant through plasmid DNA and is being tested in older dogs. The company is assessing GF-1004 in the SLAB study, which focuses on sarcopenia and longevity in aged beagles. Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength.
The randomised and blinded study includes 24 beagles aged over ten years. It is designed to assess the safety and potential effectiveness of the treatment in addressing sarcopenia and supporting longevity.
The veterinary programme gives Genflow an opportunity to evaluate its technology in ageing mammals through a defined clinical study. It may also provide a separate commercial route if the treatment progresses successfully. Results in dogs would not prove that the same approach will work in humans, but they could help the company assess delivery, biological activity and treatment design.
A third candidate, GF-1003, is in preclinical development. It uses messenger RNA to deliver the SIRT6 variant to dermal fibroblasts, which are cells involved in maintaining the structure and function of the skin. This programme extends Genflow’s platform into a more targeted area.
