AI agents are gaining the ability to operate physical equipment, creating new opportunities for automation but also raising questions about how machines are authenticated and secured. As systems begin controlling robotic arms, laboratory instruments and industrial equipment, verifying the identity of both the AI agent and the device becomes increasingly important.
Anthropic’s Model Hardware Standard (MHS) aims to simplify how AI systems connect to and operate different types of equipment. By providing a common interface for devices such as microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms and laser systems, the standard could reduce integration complexity and support wider adoption of AI-driven automation.
However, a standardised connection does not automatically make a device trustworthy. An AI agent may be authorised to perform a task, but if the connected equipment has been cloned, replaced or compromised, that authorisation could expose an organisation to security breaches or unsafe operations.
Machine identity provides a way to address this risk. By verifying a device’s identity and integrity before allowing it to communicate or execute commands, organisations can establish greater control over which machines AI agents are permitted to operate. Access policies can then determine which actions are allowed and under what conditions.
Trusted data is equally important. AI systems rely on information from connected equipment to make decisions and determine their next actions. If that information comes from an unauthorised or compromised device, the resulting decisions could be unreliable. Establishing device identity helps organisations verify the source of data and strengthen confidence in automated processes.
Device Authority’s KeyScaler platform is designed to secure machine identities throughout the device lifecycle. Its Dynamic Device Key Generation technology supports hardware-rooted identities, helping organisations authenticate devices and detect cloned or substituted endpoints. Combined with credential management and policy-based access controls, these capabilities can help ensure that connections and commands are permitted only when the required security conditions are met.
