Biotech Growth Trust plc (LON:BIOG) has delivered strong returns over the past year as the biotechnology sector begins to recover from a prolonged period of depressed valuations. The recovery has been supported by several factors, with the trust benefiting from improving market conditions and its exposure to companies across different stages of drug development.
For the 12 months to 31 July 2026, the trust recorded a net asset value (NAV) total return of 87.0%, while its share price increased by 95.8%. Both figures were more than double the 43.1% return generated by its benchmark, the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index, reflecting a period of substantial outperformance.
The performance has been broad-based, with holdings across several clinical areas contributing to returns. Companies with products at phase two and phase three clinical trial stages, as well as those with commercially available drugs, all played a part. This breadth of contribution suggests that the recovery has not been dependent on a narrow group of companies or a single area of biotechnology.
Biotech Growth Trust plc (LON:BIOG) seeks capital appreciation through investment in the worldwide biotechnology industry. The Company and the Company’s Portfolio Manager believe that there is a high congruence between companies that seek to act responsibly and those that succeed in building long-term shareholder value.
